Returning to Pilates Postpartum: What to Expect

Every recovery is different. Here's how we think about clearance, easing back in and pausing your membership in the meantime.

A client easing back into Reformer work

Many of our members begin - or return to - Pilates after pregnancy. Our instructors can modify exercises to match your stage of recovery and experience level.

    How long should you wait?

Every recovery is different. Most healthcare providers recommend waiting until you've been medically cleared before returning to exercise.

That timeline is often around six weeks after a vaginal delivery and eight weeks or longer after a cesarean delivery, although it can vary considerably depending on your recovery and your provider's recommendations.

Once you've been cleared, we'll help you ease back into class at a pace that feels appropriate for your body.

Our instructors are movement professionals, not medical providers. Questions about whether exercise is appropriate for your specific pregnancy should go to your physician, midwife or other healthcare professional.

    What coming back looks like

Expect the same modifications toolkit we use during pregnancy, applied in reverse: shorter ranges of motion, fewer long-lever abdominal exercises at first, planks from the knees or with hands elevated, and plenty of breath work.

Postpartum recovery is one of the most common reasons our instructors modify an exercise. You won't be the only person in class doing something slightly different, and it's never something to feel self-conscious about.

If coning or pressure shows up during core work, tell your instructor - the same signals we watch for during pregnancy still apply.

When should you modify Pilates during pregnancy?

Pausing your membership for maternity leave

We offer complimentary membership pauses for maternity leave, so you don't have to worry about paying for classes while you're preparing for your baby's arrival or recovering postpartum.

Simply request a membership pause on our Membership Changes page, and reactivate whenever you're ready.

    When you're ready to book

Core Classic, Core Focus, Core Circuit and Core Stretch are all easy to modify, and our instructors will help you pick the right starting point. If you'd like a slower reintroduction, a private session is a good first step.
